A team of Telegram hobbyist Android developers has accomplished a remarkable feat – booting Samsung One UI 5 on a Google Pixel 6 Pro, using the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra firmware. This has resulted in the creation of the world’s first Samsung Galaxy Pixel 6 Pro, a device that was never supposed to exist.
The team, led by @Lunarixus and with special thanks to Dyneteve and AnanJaser1211, undertook this project just for the fun of it.
The team explained that the reason the One UI 5 is easily booted on the pixel 6 pro in the first place is because the Google Pixel 6 Pro’s Tensor chip is a custom-designed Samsung Exynos chip. This is significant because most global Samsung Galaxy devices run on Exynos chips, such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
It’s worth noting that this is not a port or a GSI (Generic System Image) – the images were directly flashed from the S22 Ultra and are read-only. This means that the device is running a version of Samsung’s software that was not designed for the Pixel 6 Pro, and there are still some issues that need to be fixed before it can be considered a fully functional device.
According to the team, some of the features that are currently working on the Samsung Galaxy Pixel 6 Pro include Bluetooth, NFC, UWB, Wi-Fi, and audio. The touchscreen, screen resolution switcher, and HWC (Hardware Composer) are also functioning properly. However, there were initially some issues that needed to be resolved, including the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) and the camera, which were broken.
The team has made significant progress on the project. They have managed to fix the camera issue using a modded version of the Google Camera (Gcam), which has enabled the camera to function properly. This is a significant breakthrough as the camera is one of the most important features of any smartphone.
However, the team is still working on fixing the RIL issue. RIL is responsible for the communication between the phone’s hardware and software and is critical for functions such as cellular connectivity and SMS.
Despite the device’s limitations, the Samsung Galaxy Pixel 6 Pro project showcases the power of open-source software and the collaborative nature of the Android community. This project is not only a fun experiment, but it also highlights the potential for cross-device compatibility and the ability to use software designed for one device on another.
The Samsung Galaxy Pixel 6 Pro project is an impressive achievement that demonstrates what can be accomplished with the right knowledge and resources.
It’s fascinating to see what passionate Android developers can achieve when they are dedicated to exploring the limits of what is possible. The Samsung Galaxy Pixel 6 Pro project is an excellent example of the ingenuity and creativity of the Android development community.
We can’t wait to see what this talented team of Android developers will come up with next. Also, we will update this article once they get RIL working. You can follow the project in this telegram link as well.
